Japow is Japan’s light, dry powder, deepest from mid-January to mid-February. Plan around three things: the snow outlook, what a ski day costs and which mountain fits your trip. The 2026-27 outlook leans warm, so keep dates you can move. Across the four mountains below, an adult lift day runs from $50 (¥7,800) at Nozawa Onsen to $87 (¥13,500) at Niseko in peak weeks.
Dollar figures use about ¥155 to US$1 and are rounded; you pay in yen, so check the rate.
Which mountain fits your trip?
| Mountain | Best for | Adult day | From Tokyo | Ikon / Epic |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Niseko | First trip, English support, mostly easy terrain | $57 to $87 (¥8,800 to ¥13,500) by date | Flight plus transfer, 4.5 to 5 h door to door | Ikon 7 days, Base 5 |
| Hakuba Valley | Steeper runs, ten resorts on one pass, no flight | $72 (¥11,100) | Shinkansen plus bus, about 3 hours (route database estimates) | Epic: one free 5-day ticket across the valley |
| Nozawa Onsen | Low price, 13 free village baths (some villagers-only) | $50 (¥7,800) | Shinkansen plus bus, about 2 h 10 | Neither |
| Zao | Snow monsters, best late January to February, then a soak | About $52 to $58 (¥8,000 to ¥9,000) | Shinkansen plus bus, about 3 h to 3 h 15 | Ikon 7 days, Base 5 |
Zao’s figure comes from a resort database that cites the official page; the page itself is unconfirmed.

Is 2026-27 looking good?
The outlook leans warm. The Japan Meteorological Agency’s September outlook is the basis, and its figures are unconfirmed: it gives Hokkaido’s Sea of Japan side a 40% chance of below-normal snowfall and Honshu’s Sea of Japan side 50%. A snow-forecast site expects a “super El Nino” and rates Hokkaido the better of the two islands.
The reports do not turn “below normal” into centimetres. For scale, guides put Niseko at 14 to 16 m of snow a year and Hakuba at 10 to 12 m. A snow-report site puts the deepest stretch at mid-January to mid-February and calls Hokkaido reliable into early March.
Before you book Check the snow forecast a week out and keep your dates flexible. A snow onsen town is the fallback for a thin-snow day.
How do you get there from Tokyo?
Hokkaido is a flight plus a transfer. Honshu is a Shinkansen plus a bus. Hakuba’s Alpico line is private, so a rail pass may not cover it, and one guide says the Zao bus is not covered either. Niseko’s Resort Liner is booked ahead, per a hotel page, and its 2026-27 fare is not published. Nozawa is the simple one: the Liner from Iiyama costs $4 (¥600), with no reservation per a secondary guide.
The table’s times are route-database and guide estimates, not 2026-27 timetables.
What will it cost?
A Niseko peak day costs $87 (¥13,500) and an early or spring day $57 (¥8,800), about 35% less. The deepest weeks fall inside the dearest pricing season, 24 December to 28 February.
Multi-day tickets save about 3% a day at Niseko (7 days, peak) and 4% at Hakuba (10 days), so buy them for the date window, not the discount. Hakuba’s valley pass takes any 5 days inside 10, which helps if a storm reshuffles your week. Unused days are void with no refund.
Ikon and Epic matter if you already hold one, or if the pass costs less than the day tickets it replaces. Ikon gives 7 days at Niseko United and Zao on the full pass. Epic gives one free 5-consecutive-day ticket valid across all Hakuba Valley resorts, plus a separate 5 days at Rusutsu (confirm with Epic). Nozawa is on neither. Ikon 2026-27 prices and Japan blackout dates are unclear right now. Last known (2025-26): Base and Session passes were blacked out at Niseko on 27 to 31 December, 17 to 18 January and 14 to 15 February.
Rent or bring?
Rent unless you already own gear and your airline’s charge for the bag is smaller than the rental bill. One shop’s 2026-27 list puts standard skis or a board with boots at $61 (¥9,500) a day. One guide puts courier forwarding at $10 to $16 (¥1,500 to ¥2,500) a bag; Yamato’s ski bag service runs higher, about $24 (¥3,680) from Tokyo to Nagano or Niigata and $34 (¥5,220) to Hokkaido.
Riding a board? A leash is required across Hakuba Valley and at Rusutsu, and Rusutsu lists private snowboard lessons only.
What do the rules say about leaving the piste?
Safety Niseko allows the backcountry only through open gates. Its Rules page says everyone out there “should” wear a helmet and carry a beacon, and calls carrying a beacon, probe and shovel “very highly recommended”. Niseko charges at least $645 (¥100,000) for a backcountry rescue, and breaking the rules can cost you your lift pass.
No Japan-wide law requiring a guide was found, so the rules are resort by resort. Hakuba Valley’s safety page lists gates at 5 of its 10 resorts and prohibits backcountry access at the other five. Hakuba47 is on that no-gate list, but its own page describes designated gates reached through Goryu terrain; the two sources conflict.
Nozawa has two gates and does not install them in low-snow periods, which matters in a warm year.
Can I…?
- Can I ski off-piste in Japan without a guide? Depends on the resort, not the law. Five Hakuba Valley resorts ban backcountry access.
- Can I fly to Japan with my own skis or snowboard? Yes, as checked sporting equipment.
- Can I take a snowboard on the Shinkansen? Yes. JR East’s guide reportedly allows 250 cm total and 30 kg on the Nagano routes; on the Tokaido line, past 160 cm you reserve a seat or pay.
- Can I ski Hokkaido without a car? Yes: Niseko, Kiroro and Rusutsu have public transfers from New Chitose or Sapporo, and the 2026-27 Resort Liner dates and fares are not published.
- Can I use Ikon or Epic in Japan? Yes, if the resort is on the list. Nozawa is on neither.
Quick answers
Is Japow guaranteed?
No, snow is not guaranteed for any date. Deep snow is likeliest from mid-January to mid-February, and the 2026-27 outlook leans warm.
How much does a Japow ski day cost?
An adult day ticket is $50 (¥7,800) at Nozawa Onsen, $72 (¥11,100) on the Hakuba Valley pass and $57 to $87 (¥8,800 to ¥13,500) at Niseko, depending on the date. Zao is about $52 to $58 (¥8,000 to ¥9,000), per a resort database.
Which mountain suits a first Japow trip?
Niseko for English support and mostly easy terrain, Hakuba for steeper runs reached from Tokyo by train and bus, Nozawa Onsen for a village with 13 public baths, Zao for snow monsters. The resort comparison sorts more than a dozen areas by situation.
Do I need a guide to ski off-piste in Japan?
Depends on the resort. No Japan-wide law requiring a guide was found, so resorts set the rules: Niseko allows the backcountry only through open gates, five of Hakuba Valley's ten resorts prohibit it, and Hakuba Valley and Nagano Prefecture advise a certified guide for inexperienced skiers.
