Can you use an Ikon or Epic pass in Japan?
Yes, if...
Yes, if the resort is on the list. Epic: one 5-day ticket across Hakuba Valley, plus 5 days at Rusutsu. Ikon: ten areas, 7 days. Nozawa is on neither.
Short answer
Yes, if the resort is on the pass and you stay inside the day cap. Epic gives one free 5-consecutive-day ticket valid across all Hakuba Valley resorts, plus a separate 5 days at Rusutsu. Ikon covers ten Japanese areas, 7 days at each on the full pass and 5 on Base. Nozawa Onsen is on neither.
Why
Both passes give a fixed number of days per Japanese destination, not open access. Niseko is on Ikon but not Epic, and Hakuba is on Epic but not Ikon. The resort-by-resort table is in Ikon and Epic passes in Japan, part of the Japow guide.
What to do instead
If your resort is not covered, buy day tickets or a local multi-day pass. An adult day at Nozawa Onsen is $50 (¥7,800) from 19 Dec to 28 Mar. An Ikon holder who wants Hakuba can use the valley pass, $345 (¥53,400) for any 5 days inside a 10-day window. More prices are in Passes & prices.
Conditions
- Epic: physical card and photo ID. The mobile pass cannot ride the lifts at Hakuba, which also has no night skiing and no Epic lodging or dining discounts. Epic Day Passes, Mountain Rewards, Resort Charge and Bring-A-Mate are not valid in Japan. Call Vail Guest Services before you arrive.
- Ikon: of the Session Pass rows read, only Niseko United takes it (2 to 4 days). Shiga Kogen is listed on Ikon per the Ikon page, with days shared across the 18 areas per a guide; confirm individual areas before you spend a pass day.
- Ikon prices and Japan blackout dates: see the Ikon Pass site.
- Rusutsu: the page that gives the 5 days is labelled 2025-26. The Epic page lists no restricted dates, and one trade report lists several. Check the Epic Pass site before you fix dates.
Dollar figures use about ¥155 to US$1 and are rounded; you pay in yen, so check the rate.
Questions
By Ikon: 7 days on the full pass, 5 on Base and 2 to 4 on Session, per the Ikon page. The four Niseko mountains also have their own rows with no access shown, so use the Niseko United row. Epic's Japan list does not include Niseko.
No. The Hakuba Valley Epic page says the mobile pass cannot ride the lifts, so you need the physical card, plus photo ID.
