Animate Ikebukuro opens 10:00 to 21:00 and Mandarake Nakano 12:00 to 20:00 daily. Tax-free becomes pay-then-refund on 1 Nov 2026.

Animate’s Ikebukuro main store lists 10:00 to 21:00 on its official page, and Mandarake’s Nakano shop lists 12:00 to 20:00 every day of the year, so the opening hours favour Ikebukuro first and Nakano after noon. Nakano Broadway holds about 207 stores, per the building’s own site. Tax-free shopping changes on 1 November 2026 from a discount at the till to a refund at departure.

Shops are described from their own pages, with no ranking. This page sits in the Anime and manga hub; the district routes are in Akihabara for first-timers and Nakano Broadway and Mandarake. Dollar figures use about ¥155 to US$1 and are rounded; you pay in yen, so check the rate.

Mandarake’s buyback reception stops at 19:30, thirty minutes before the shop closes. The other Nakano Broadway shops set their own times, so allow for some being shut.

Before you go Reach Mandarake Nakano after 12:00 and bring anything you plan to sell before 19:30, when buyback reception stops. Animate Ikebukuro is the earlier stop.

What is Animate Ikebukuro?

Animate Ikebukuro Main Store is at 1-20-7 Higashi-Ikebukuro, a five minute walk from the east exit, and lists 10:00 to 21:00. The official page links Animate’s tax-free guidance and mentions Alipay and WeChat Pay for tax-free purchases. It also asks visitors to use public transport, citing pedestrian priority in Toshima.

In Ikebukuro, Sunshine City’s English site lists an aquarium, an observatory, a planetarium, NAMJATOWN, the Bandai Namco Cross Store Tokyo, a Crayon Shinchan official store and Sanrio Cafe. Its home page gives no opening hours or tax-free handling. Secondary listings describe Otome Road as the street of shops between Animate and K-Books Cosplay Store, with no single operator, so hours vary by shop.

What is Mandarake in Nakano Broadway?

Mandarake opened in Nakano Broadway in 1980 as a manga bookstore, per the building’s own site. Its Nakano page lists 12:00 to 20:00 every day of the year, with buyback reception until 19:30, read from an excerpt of the page. Whether visitors can use the buyback counter, and with what ID, is not stated.

Nakano Broadway is a commercial and residential complex that opened in 1966. Its site says it became a “subculture sacred ground” after 1991, with old neighbourhood shops beside niche hobby stores and newer bitcoin and 3D-printing shops. It lists about 207 stores from the basement to the fourth floor.

The building is a five minute walk from the north exit of Nakano Station, on the JR and Tozai lines, and has no parking. Its pages give no building hours or closed day. Secondary listings say many shops close on Wednesdays, which the building’s pages do not confirm, so check the shop you want. The floor-by-floor list is in Nakano Broadway and Mandarake.

What changes for tax-free shopping on 1 November 2026?

From 1 November 2026 you pay the price including 10% tax at the shop and claim the tax back when you leave, instead of having it taken off at the register, per the official tax-free leaflet from the Japan Tourism Agency, MLIT, the National Tax Agency and Customs. Under the earlier rule, goods of $32 (¥5,000) or more were exempt at the register.

The steps for the new system:

  1. Pay the price including 10% tax at the shop.
  2. Spend at least $32 (¥5,000) before tax at one shop on one day. This minimum comes from secondary guides.
  3. Leave Japan within 90 days of buying.
  4. Carry all the items out, and claim the refund at departure through the customs terminal or Visit Japan Web.

The leaflet drops the sealed-bag rule and places the customs step before check-in or security, so keep your purchases in your carry-on. Secondary guides add that general goods and consumables are now combined and that the $3,230 (¥500,000) consumables cap is gone.

Two more leaflet points matter for a manga or figure haul. Customs checks goods per receipt, so keep everything from one receipt together. Goods used or consumed in Japan get no refund.

Animate’s page mentions tax-free, as above. Tax-free terms for Mandarake, Kinokuniya and Book Off were not found, so ask at the counter whether the shop is licensed for tax-free and whether used goods qualify before you pay.

To verify The leaflet gives no minimum spend, and the $32 (¥5,000) figure comes from secondary guides. Confirm the minimum with the shop before you buy.
