Book Kumano Kodo lodging through Kumano Travel about six months ahead for spring and autumn; online booking closes 20 days before check-in. The Nakahechi route is open all year and runs from 7.5 to 25 km to Hongu Taisha, depending on your start. The Kohechi route, over 65 km with four passes, is closed from mid-December to mid-March.

How far ahead do you book?

Book about six months ahead for the spring and autumn peaks, per the Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau. Takahara, Chikatsuyu, Nonaka and Koguchi fill first. The bureau names Kumano Travel as the official portal, and a booking there also registers your walk with the local authorities.

A booking is a request, not a confirmation. Availability is not secured until staff contact the provider, and you receive a Processed Reservation Request email. Full payment is due within 48 hours of that email. Dates cannot be moved, so a change means cancelling and rebooking.

Kumano Travel sells set tours and packages at four levels: Highlight, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert. A bureau-affiliated guide puts a typical trip at 3 to 5 nights. Camping is mostly first come, but peaks such as Golden Week need a booking.

Lodging is limited. Without a booking a place may be full, may not serve meals or may be closed. Give dietary requests when you book. Dinner is about 18:00, so plan to arrive about 17:00.

The day booking opens, the cancellation terms, accommodation prices, permits and the Dual Pilgrim credential rules were not found. The terms sit on Kumano Travel’s own pages, and prices appear only inside its booking system.

How do you handle bears on the Kumano Kodo?

Bears are rare on the Nakahechi route. The bureau reports no bear incidents, and says most reported bears turn out to be monkeys, boar or deer.

Its advice:

  • Walk in a group and talk or clap.
  • Stay alert near running water.
  • Finish before dusk.
  • Take food waste out.
  • Leave the earbuds out.
  • Report sightings to the local authorities.

If a bear attacks, the bureau says to lie face down and protect your head and neck. The Ministry of the Environment’s brown bear guidance, from its Shiretoko Rausu Visitor Centre page, says to curl up and protect your head and neck, so the two sources differ on posture. The rest of the national picture is on Bear safety.

Safety Walk in a group, finish before dusk and keep earbuds out. Report any bear sighting to the local authorities.

What about winter and the Kohechi route?

The Nakahechi route is open all year. In winter it brings freezing temperatures, a chance of snow from late December to February and earlier nightfall. Some inns close for the off-season or New Year, and buses are limited. The Kawayu Sennin-buro river bath opens from 1 December to the end of February.

The Kohechi route runs more than 65 km over four passes above 1,000 m. It is technically closed from mid-December to mid-March because of snow on the passes, while the southern Hatenashi-toge pass stays open all year. Its northern sections are isolated, so the bureau says to be well prepared.

Closed in winter The Kohechi route is closed from mid-December to mid-March. Reservations are required in every village (Koyasan, Omata, Miura-guchi and Totsukawa Onsen), partial itineraries are not accepted, and the bureau says to book the two Miura-guchi lodgings first.

The tips page also lists an estimated closure of the Ohechi route between Wabuka and Tako stations, from 8 June 2026 to 30 April 2027, and a detour on the north side of Obako-toge on the Kohechi.
