Nishiki Market asks you not to eat while walking. Most of these markets leave hours to each shop, so a stall can be shut while the market is open.
Hours and closed days at a glance
Toyosu and Hakodate open at 5:00, and closed days differ by market and by shop. The table covers seven markets in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kanazawa and Hokkaido.

When does Toyosu open, and can you see the tuna auction?
Toyosu is open 5:00 to 17:00 and closed Sundays, public holidays and other closure days, per the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Shops and restaurants inside keep their own hours, so the market can be open while a given restaurant is shut. Both the Metropolitan Government and the Toyosu Market site publish an opening and closure calendar, and closed days have no entry on it.
In 2025-26 the market closed from 31 December to 4 January. The 2026-27 year-end dates are unclear right now: check the official calendar before you go.
The tuna auction runs roughly 5:30 to 6:30. The observation deck needs advance online registration, for 5:45 to 6:25, and only on opening days. Without registration you can watch from the second-floor visitor passage. Registration rules change by month, so read the Toyosu Market page for your date.
At Uogashi Yokocho, the Toyosu Market page encourages tourists to come from 8:00, because shopkeepers are busy serving trade buyers earlier.
How early should you go to Tsukiji Outer Market?
Arrive after 9:00. The market’s official advice for the public is 9:00 to 14:00, and trade buyers shop from 6:00 to 9:00. Each shop sets its own hours. Many shops close on Sundays and some on Wednesdays, and the market’s official calendar lists the closure days. Read it for your date, because only some Wednesdays are closure days.
Plat Tsukiji, the information centre, opens 8:00 to 14:00 on weekdays and Saturdays, and 10:00 to 14:00 on Sundays, holidays and closure days.
The market’s shopping page sets three rules:
- Smoking on Chuo-ku streets is banned outside designated areas.
- Avoid large suitcases and strollers, because the lanes are narrow.
- Ask shopkeepers before you take photos.
No eating-while-walking rule was found on the official pages.
Can you eat while walking at Nishiki Market?
No. Kyoto City Tourism asks visitors to avoid eating while walking: eat in front of the shop where you bought the food, or take it home. It calls this one of the market’s core rules. It is a request, not a ban.
Nishiki is a lane of about 400 m between Teramachi and Takakura.
What are Kuromon Market’s hours?
Kuromon has no single set of market hours, because each shop sets its own. Its information center page, about two years old, lists the Information Center at 9:00 to 18:00 with no regular holiday. The same page gives shop examples such as 8:00 to 17:00 and 11:00 to 23:00, says many shops close one weekday or Sunday, and says some close 1 to 4 January. One supermarket inside the market is listed as open 24 hours.
How do you reach Omicho Market in Kanazawa?
Walk 15 minutes from the east exit of Kanazawa Station, or take Hokutetsu buses 6 to 9 to Mukaigatsuji. Three car parks are attached to the market. Omicho’s official site is in Japanese only.
When do Hakodate Morning Market and Nijo Market open?
Hakodate Morning Market runs 5:00 to 14:00, varying by store, and the city tourism page says it has no holiday. A second city page narrows the opening by season: 6:00 from January to April and 5:00 from May to December. The squid-fishing activity runs 6:30 to 13:30 or until sold out. It closes on the third Wednesday in some months and from 31 December to 3 January. Jiyu Ichiba, a separate market, lists 7:00 to 17:00, and most of its shops close on Sundays.
Nijo Market in Sapporo lists shops at 7:00 to 18:00 and restaurants at 6:00 to 21:00, with individual hours differing, per Sapporo tourism. The same page puts the busiest hours, when stock runs down, at 8:00 to 11:00.
Where next?
The Food hub lists every food page, and the Food guide sets the markets beside dishes, ordering and costs. What a meal costs in Japan has chain prices. Kobe beef and wagyu covers Hyogo’s beef. For Kyoto, the tea ceremony guide covers styles, prices and booking. Regions: Kanto, Kansai and Hokkaido.
