Seaside outdoor onsen bath in Hakodate

Answer - Get answers

Can you go in an onsen with a tattoo in Japan?

Depends

Depends on the bath, not the law. No national rule exists, so each venue decides. A private bath is the fallback.

Short answer

Depends on the bath, not the law. Japan has no national rule on tattoos in onsen, so each venue sets its own. Some accept tattoos, some refuse them and many publish nothing, so ask before you go. A private bath is the fallback.

Why

The ban traces back to yakuza associations. The Japan Tourism Agency later urged inns to relax it and offer stickers or private baths, but adoption is optional. Some ryokan accept tattoos or decide case by case.

What do named baths say?

Each line states what the bath’s official page says.

  • Kusatsu (Gozanoyu, Ohtakinoyu, Sai-no-kawara Rotenburo): the Gozanoyu FAQ says there is no specific refusal of people with tattoos at the three baths, foreign visitors included, and asks you to follow the manners.
  • Hakone Tenzan: its FAQ admits tattooed guests only alone (“as a rule one person”) and asks you to cover up. The small Oku no Yu bath is closed to them.
  • Beppu Hyotan, Nozawa village baths, Zao Dairotenburo, Ginzan public baths: no tattoo restriction published on the official page.

Absence of a rule is not permission. Policies can change, and staff decide on the day.

What to do instead

  • Book a private bath, which is exclusive use and fine with tattoos.
  • Choose a room with its own bath.
  • Try a cover sticker where the venue allows it, for small tattoos only.
  • If you write to a venue, give the tattoo’s rough size and place, and ask about the shared bath, stickers and a private bath in one message.

Conditions

  • Large tattoos usually mean a private bath only.
  • Check the venue’s own page or ask before arrival.

Before you go Email the venue before you travel, not at the door.

Quick answers

Is there a law against tattoos in onsen?

No. Each facility decides for itself. The ban traces back to yakuza associations, and the tourism agency has since urged inns to relax it.

How common are tattoo bans?

A 2015 tourism agency survey of 581 facilities that replied found 56% refused tattoos, 31% did not and 13% allowed them if covered. One onsen directory has no recorded answer for 4,749 of its 6,173 baths. Both figures are rough.
